The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center will hold a Pre-Holiday Hike at Oso Flaco Lake on Saturday, Dec. 23 at 9 a.m.
This hike is sponsored by the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center and will be led by Ray Segovia. Those interested in joining are encouraged to arrive about 10-15 minutes early.
The casual/moderate walk through the dunes with light water exposure (prepare accordingly), to the Chumash Shell Midden, is about 2.5-3 hours round-trip. It is suggested that participants dress in layers and bring water and snacks. Closed-toed shoes are recommended as the habitat is coastal dune scrub and there is the possibility of poison oak and ticks in the natural dune areas.
For members of the center to participate in the hike it is a $5 fee and for nonmembers it is $10. Heavy rain cancels this trip.
The Chumash Shell Midden at Oso Flaco is a significant archaeological site located within the Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area. A midden is essentially a refuse or dump site, and consists of shells and other debris left by the Chumash people over generations.
