Cyclist badly injured in traffic collision

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a driver who reportedly fled the scene after colliding with a bicycle, leaving a victim badly injured.

The Jan. 4 crash is the third major incident involving a vehicle and bicycle in Simi Valley in recent weeks.

It happened about 7:50 p.m. on Thursday in the area of Stearns Street and Los Angeles Avenue, authorities said.

“The bicyclist unfortunately sustained major injuries,” the Simi Valley Police Department said in a Nixle alert.

According to the initial information and preliminary investigation, it appears the bicyclist was traveling northbound across Los Angeles Avenue, west of Stearns Street when the rider was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound Los Angeles Avenue.

Police say the vehicle fled the scene and was described by a witness as a late 1990’s to early 2000’s gold Toyota sedan. The car probably has significant damage to the front or right front side.

Anyone with information or video of this tragic incident should contact Traffic Collision Investigator Martinez at (805) 583-6224 or via email at [email protected].

See this week’s Simi Valley Acorn, scheduled to be published online at noon today and distributed in print tomorrow, for details about two recent fatal incidents involving vehicles and cyclists. A 45-year-old mother of seven died after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in the area of Erringer and Fitzgerald roads on Dec. 28. Another person, a 65-year-old man, died in early December, 10 days after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike at the intersection of Kuehner and Mount Sinai drives.
