Giants free agent target Shōta Imanaga is nearing a decision

Happy Friday, San Francisco Giants fans.

It has been a very quiet few weeks for the Giants. The only thing of note that they’ve done since making a splash with Jung Hoo Lee is sign backup catcher Tom Murphy. A quick glance at their transactions page shows that their last official move was all the way back on December 26, when they re-signed Yoshi Tsutsugo to a Minor League deal … a contract that was reported months ago.

All of baseball has been quiet since Yoshinobu Yamamoto signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers four days before Christmas. That quietness is expected to continue for the next week, because teams and players have to exchange arbitration figures a week from today. The expectation is that the arbitration process will occupy the bulk of the time for most teams, and the majority of the remaining moves will be in the weeks that follow.

But that’s not true for one player: left-handed pitcher Shōta Imanaga. We’re going to get a decision on Imanaga soon, because his posting window expires on Thursday. He’ll surely choose a team by then, since the alternative is to sacrifice a likely nine-figure contract and return to Japan for the 2024 season.

While they weren’t linked to him all that much in the earlier stages of free agency, the Giants have been one of the teams most connected to Imanaga in the weeks since Yamamoto signed. There’s a whole lot to like about the 30 year old, even though his contract might reach a point that makes the Giants a little uncomfortable. Then again, it probably won’t make them as uncomfortable as the contract Blake Snell will get.

We’ll soon find out if the Giants land either of those two, or the other big names: Matt Chapman, Cody Bellinger, and Jordan Montgomery. Baseball insiders continue to expect the team to sign one or two of those players. Giants fans continue to prepare for disappointment.
