The River Christian Reformed Church in Redlands and CrossPoint Church in Chino are among about 50 remote locations that will broadcast the January Series, a lecture and cultural arts series from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Mich.
This year’s series, featuring national podcasters and journalists, a world-renowned rock climber, a French-American jazz pianist and composer, an American legal scholar and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, runs weekdays from Jan. 15 through Feb. 2, according to a news release.
The lectures will be livestreamed 9:30-10:30 a.m. each day at the Redlands church, 459 E. Highland Ave., and the Chino church, 6950 Edison Ave. Admission is free.
The lectures will also be available for viewing on personal devices. Some are available only on the date of the presentation; others may also be viewed later.
The series begins Jan. 15 with Lerone Martin, an associate professor of religious studies at Stanford University, speaking on “Soul Force: The Challenge of Martin Luther King.” Martin, author of “The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover,” will discuss the historical and legal context of government surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr., its implications for the civil rights movement and lessons to be considered for today’s social justice efforts, according to the news release.
Other speakers include pianist and composer Dan Tepfer, presenting “From Bach to Natural Machines: Algorithms as the Shapers of Music,” Jan. 16; Caroline Randall Williams, a poet, young adult novelist and cookbook author, presenting “Soul Food and the Collective Cultural Memory,” Jan. 18; rock climber Tommy Caldwell presenting “Route Finding for Success,” Jan. 25; and Daniel Bowman Jr., a novelist, poet and professor who received an autism diagnosis at age 35, presenting “Neurodivergent Storytelling,” Jan 30.
