Three Takeaways from last night:

Penalty kill excellence

The Reign’s Penalty Kill was excellent last night. Everyone was engaged, blocking shots, or getting sticks in the lane to disrupt any potential chances. Those little details led to Ontario getting a short-handed goal from Akil Thomas. After Saturday’s performance, where the Reign allowed two power-play goals in the third period, Marco Strum should be pleased with the effort from his penalty killers last night.

The Swedish duo

Both Erik Portillo and Samuel Fagemo had standout performances. Portillo stopped 36 of 37 shots against and continues to improve during his rookie season. His rebound control last night was excellent, and he didn’t put the puck in harm’s way.

Samuel Fagemo continued his hot streak with another 3-point Performance. He is up to 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points. That is absurd, considering he’s only played 22 games for Ontario when he had 32 points in 56 games last year. He’s making a case for the Kings to give him a look, considering their scoring struggles of late.

Up next

Ontario has its toughest stretch of games coming up on this road trip. Going against the Calgary Wranglers and Abbotsford Canucks will not be easy. Ontario has to play perfect hockey because both teams have highly skilled players and can take over a game if you let them.

*Samuel Fagemo had his 9th multi-point game!

*Akil Thomas picked up a shorthanded goal. It’s great to see him continue his amazing hot streak of late. That’s seven points in five games for Akil Thomas!

*Steven Santini picked up his first point since 11/17 against Calgary.

*Wyatte Wylie has points in three of his last five games played. He’s provided depth scoring on the back end since the recall of Brandt Clarke.

*Ontario is now 5-0-0 against San Jose this season.

Ontario’s next game is on Thursday, January 11th, in Calgary to take on Dustin Wolf and the Calgary Wranglers. The puck drop is at 6 PM and can be viewed on AHLTV.
