The Will C. Wood High School boys basketball team got off to a great start in the Monticello Empire League Tuesday night, defeating defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division III finalist Vanden at home, 57-54.

Wood trailed 30-22 at the half, but came on strong on the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 15-10.

Down 40-37, Wood outscored Vanden 20-14 in the final quarter to pull off the win.

“It was a close fought game. Both teams were playing really hard,” Wood head coach Mark Wudel said. “Vanden went up in the first half and we adjusted some things at halftime.”

Vanden tied the game at 43 in the fourth before Wood took the lead on Kimani Dokes’ put back with 35 seconds left. Wood stopped Vanden on the next possession, forcing the Vikings to foul. Corey Edwards split a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats up by three before Vanden missed a game-tying three at the buzzer.

Wood evened up its overall record at 9-9, while Vanden fell to 9-7 on the year.

The two teams will meet up again at Vanden on Jan. 25. Last year Wood went 2-8 in league play while Vanden finished in second to first-place Vacaville.
